IPL 2027: Zaheer Khan Takes Over as CSK Head Coach, Fleming Era Officially Over

Chennai Super Kings have a new man in charge. Former India pacer Zaheer Khan will be the franchise’s head coach for IPL 2027. The announcement came on September 21, 2026, ending months of speculation.

Zaheer replaces Stephen Fleming, who stepped down in July 2026 after an 18-year association with CSK. The New Zealander’s exit marked the end of one of the most successful coaching tenures in IPL history.

The Fleming Legacy: Five Titles and a Lasting Impact

Stephen Fleming’s numbers at CSK are staggering. He joined as a player in 2008 and took over as head coach in 2009. Over the next 18 years, he built a dynasty.

Under Fleming, CSK won five IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. They also lifted two Champions League T20 trophies. The team reached 10 IPL finals and made the playoffs a record 12 times.

But the last three seasons were rough. CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs since their 2023 title win. The franchise and Fleming mutually agreed to part ways in July 2026.

Why Zaheer Khan? Dhoni’s Big Push

CSK didn’t rush this decision. Managing Director K.S. Viswanathan confirmed that MS Dhoni was central to the process. “We take all our decisions after discussing with Dhoni, and once he suggested his name, the management spoke to Zaheer and convinced him,” Viswanathan said.

Dhoni and Zaheer go way back. During their playing days, Dhoni relied on Zaheer as the leader of India’s bowling attack. He once even called Zaheer the “Sachin Tendulkar of bowling”.

Zaheer brings a strong coaching résumé. He worked with Mumbai Indians from 2018 to 2022 as Director of Cricket Operations and later Global Head of Development. In 2024, he joined Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor ahead of IPL 2025.

This will be his first stint as a head coach in the IPL.

What CSK’s Management Is Saying

The CSK top brass is excited. Owner Rupa Gurunath said Zaheer’s “distinguished playing career and proven ability to nurture young talent” make him a valuable addition.

Viswanathan added: “Zaheer is a world-class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers. He’s one of the finest cricketing brains”.

Zaheer himself called it an honour. “As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk makes it even more special,” he said.

Fans React: Surprise and Excitement

CSK fans were caught off guard. Zaheer’s name had barely featured in speculation. One fan wrote: “Absolutely love how this was done in stealth mode. Fed garbage news to reporters and youtubers only to announce ZAK!”.

Another said: “Didn’t expect this. This came out of the syllabus. Congratulations. New era begins”.

What’s Next for Zaheer and CSK?

Zaheer is on a one-year contract with a provision for extension. His first big task is retention decisions ahead of the auction.

CSK’s squad has holes, especially in bowling. Viswanathan specifically mentioned pacers Khaleel Ahmed and Gurjapneet Singh as players Zaheer can help develop.

The bigger goal is simple: get back to the playoffs. CSK haven’t finished in the top four since 2023. With a mega auction coming before 2028, this is a crucial transition period.

The Dhoni-Zaheer partnership is now official. One is still on the field. The other is calling the shots from the dugout. CSK fans will hope it brings the glory days back.
